We met with Shirley Kent the Manager of Kempsey Neighbourhood Centre (KNC) to see how we could help them with supporting some of the local community, especially after the increase of perishable goods and cost of living.
KNC offers a cashless support to all local people living in the Macleay Valley and the Mid North Coast, their services are offered to those that are most disadvantaged and vulnerable. Kempsey Neighborhood Centers mission is ‘to strengthen the local community by promoting the principles of social justice and empowering people to enhance their quality of life’. KNC offer many services and access to; clothes, toiletries, sleeping bags, swags, sim cards, mobile phones, cost of train tickets, connecting people with support services for mental health, community housing, financial help and food relief packages, they also offer access to kitchen facilities during the week.
With costs going up and people needing more support they have been trying to subsidise cost by running garage sales organised by volunteers, with all profits going to supporting those who need it most. They have recently relocated from West Kempsey to the CBD which offers a larger area that, they can offer bathroom facilities and gardens. This move will allow them to grow as the demand of support is evidently needed in our Valley.
The Kempsey Macleay RSL Club are proud to donate two thousand dollars to help support KNC mission. We believe building a stronger community is vital as it encourages everyone to lend a hand when needed the most. Having organisations such as the KNC is essential in communities as it spreads awareness of important aspects of life such as, driving courses, mental health, financial help and many other factors. Kemspey RSL strongly support helping organisations such as the Kempsey Neighbourhood Centre as they know what is needed within the community from speaking and helping through local projects, therefore funds can be spent efficiently. This is the start to a great community relationship, we will keep in close contact with Shirley to see how else we can support KNC.
