The Lawrence Kids Fundraiser 2023
The Lawrence family have made it their life mission to raise awareness about Bowel Cancer after losing their mother, Karen to the disease in 2021. Karen was first diagnosed in 2014, at the young age of 39.
“Mum underwent over 100 rounds of chemotherapy treatments, as well as four radiation treatments,” daughter Brooklyn Lawrence said.
“Unfortunately, in November 2021, after seven long and hard years we, as a family and a community, said our goodbyes to Karen.”
“We decided we not only wanted to, but more so needed to raise awareness of Bowel Cancer, a cancer which is clearly shrugged aside far too often.”
In 2019, Brooklyn, and her three siblings, started the small not-for-profit group ‘The Lawrence Kids Supporting Bowel Cancer Awareness Month’ to campaign and raise awareness of the disease.
“We started off with a small bake sale at our local netball courts. Since then, we have held an annual bake sale, with the addition of a raffle” Brooklyn said.
“In 2022 our target was $7,000. We well exceeded this and raised $10,000 with the help of many local businesses and the community.”
The family is hoping to raise even more money with proceeds from this year’s Bake Sale to be split between Bowel Cancer Australia and the Oncology Unit at Port Macquarie Base Hospital to support local patients and their families.
